Job Description

MBM Contracting Inc – Estimator

Estimator — Commercial Construction

Pittsburgh, PA | Full-Time | Salary $110,000-130,000

Position Overview

MBM Contracting Inc. is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Estimator to join our Construction team. In this role, you will be responsible for planning and executing comprehensive project estimates across all phases of design, as well as providing critical cost guidance during project execution. You will collaborate closely with Project Engineers, Project Managers, and Clients to deliver accurate, well-supported estimates that drive successful project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Estimate Planning: Develop and manage structured estimate plans, including scope breakdown into estimating packages, coordination of internal and third-party estimating resources, and ongoing progress tracking against the plan.
  • Construction Knowledge: Apply a comprehensive understanding of all construction divisions to evaluate subcontractor scopes and ensure accurate cost representation across all trades.
  • Basis of Estimate (BOE): Author and maintain BOE documentation throughout the estimate lifecycle, capturing scope definitions, execution strategies, precision levels, key assumptions, exclusions, risks, and other critical project parameters.
  • Material Takeoffs: Conduct thorough material takeoffs from construction drawings to verify design quantities and validate contractor-proposed quantities.
  • Cost Estimating: Produce cost estimates ranging from high-level rough-order-of-magnitude (ROM) to detailed, bottoms-up estimates. Lead estimate review meetings with key stakeholders—including Scheduling and Construction Management—to align cost projections with execution plans, identify design growth potential, and ensure appropriate use of allowances. Benchmark estimates against internal historical unit rates.
  • Risk Assessment & Contingency: Partner with Project Managers to identify project risks and lead the contingency development process to ensure appropriate cost reserves.
  • Quality Assurance: Review subcontractor-submitted cost work for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with project scope requirements.
  • Process Improvement: Contribute to the ongoing development and standardization of estimating systems, processes, templates, metrics, and benchmarks to support consistent and reliable cost planning across all project stages.
  • Preconstruction Services: Engage directly with clients during preconstruction phases to develop complete project estimates from initial conceptual reports through commencement of construction.
  • Bid Management: Organize and respond to client-supplied bid forms with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as required to support successful project delivery.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction, Construction Management, or a related discipline; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in construction cost estimating and preconstruction services.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with On-Screen Takeoff software is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong work ethic with a commitment to quality and accuracy.
