Job Duties
VDOT's Madison Area Headquarters, located in Madison County, Virginia is seeking a skilled operator/motivated leader to serve as a maintenance crew leader.
As a Maintenance Crew Leader, you will:
• Work closely with supervisors to identify maintenance needs
• Develop schedules, plan work, and determine resources needed to execute work assignments
• Assign work tasks, order materials, and determine equipment needed to accomplish tasks
• Provide guidance and training to crew performing highway maintenance activities such as clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and patching roads
• Lead crews, set up work zones, perform traffic control, and focus on workplace safety
• Champion safety and continuously monitor work operations to ensure the safety of crew and that work complies with agency safety standards
• Operate equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, rollers, and loaders
• Train crew in the safety operation of equipment
• Maintain work accomplishments and serve as backup supervisor as needed
• Will work during emergencies. You will lead crews during emergencies that block roads such as traffic accidents and storm debris. You will provide traffic control and perform activities necessary to reopen the road.
• During severe weather, you will prepare for events, lead others, and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12 hours and may include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours.

Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals.
• Ability to lead, direct, oversee the work of others and train others.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Safety shoes required.
• Basic knowledge of inventory procedures.
• Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Skill operating and maintaining light and medium trucks and equipment.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and use hand and power tools.
Additional Considerations
• Commercial Driver' License (CDL)
• Experience preparing reports and keeping records.
• Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operator
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Construction or related field desired.
• Experience using computers and software applications.
• Experience in roadway maintenance activities.
• Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety
• Experience in roadway maintenance and repair. Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the MUTCD or similar regulations. Experience overseeing the work of others.
• Experience leading and training work crews.
• CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
• Experience applying inventory practices and procedures.
• Emergency operations experience to include snow-removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up.
